GAZE INSIDE

CONCEPT PIECE 2015

GAZE INSIDE is a personal project designed to explore a fictional mystical spiritual practice set in a speculative near-future in which extreme air pollution  has become a limiting factor in the human experience. Near-sightedness and even blindness have become the norm, but instead of seeking structural change, society has chosen simply to bandage its wounds, treating them as new commercial niches to be filled – with eyeglasses, chic oxygen bars, and even a new faith, one which seeks not to heal the wounds of its followers, but to allow them to engulf themselves fully in a world beyond their woes.

The hole is a placeholder for the infinite, an escape to the inner reaches of the mind. Its cult is one that celebrates quietude, meditation, and plurality of vision, one which is limited only by the imagination of its followers.

Initially developed as a stand-alone design project, GAZE INSIDE may, in the future, serve as the basis for a larger-scale installation or performance piece.

"When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
